8 Ball News: Region Tour Event 4 Report
Posted on Sunday, August 19 2001 @ 20:04:25 BSTby ProfessorPool
Pool in the South The 2001 Region Seven Tour arrived back in Kentish Town, London, in August, and its record of producing different winners at different events kept going with IPA professional Kevin McCallum, who was runner-up in event three, winning a close-fought final against IPA professional Paul McNeil, who won event two.

The opening round saw many no-shows and at least one player progressed through to the money stages without having to chalk his cue. There were still many tight matches and plenty of good pool to enjoy though. Stephen Payne eventually won through a tight match against London’s Nigel Smith 7-5, and Phil Davis somewhat surprisingly beat talented young Ryan Harper 7-5. Morray Dolan recovered from an early deficit to beat Paul Brooks 7-3, and Neil Ward ensured England Youth International Andrew Breen’s miserable season continued with a 7-5 victory.

Elsewhere, Dave Rose had to pull out all the stops to beat another talented youngster, Frankie Strivens, 7-5, while Barbara Taylor continued her solid season with a 7-2 victory over Surrey’s Martin Lambert. Finally, London’s Darren Suchley beat Berkshire’s Pat Phelan 7-4.

The last 32 saw many very closely fought games with Kevin O’Connor beating his Surrey team-mate Dave Bulmer 7-6, and Kevin McCallum playing well to beat an impressive Dave Penly 7-6. Uk8ball.com team-mates Dave Hall and Matt Cooke also shared the honours until Hall snatched the deciding frame to win 7-6, and Paul McNeil beat the ever-superb Dave Hornby 7-3. Elsewhere, Pete Ashman beat Kent’s Mark Harris 7-4, Scott Yardley ended Dave Rose’s interest in the event with a 7-3 victory and Darren Suchley beat Barbara Taylor 7-4. Other results of note saw Martin Prime beat Robert Trosino 7-5, Hampshire’s Steve Parker win against Robert Uzell 7-2, and Graham Butler beat Shaun Southern in another tight 7-6 game.

The last 16 saw the match of the day with Kevin McCallum against tournament favourite Morray Dolan. Dolan produced two superb clearances in the first three frames to take an early lead, but McCallum fought back and eventually ran out a 7-3 winner. Elsewhere, Dean Wisher beat Kevin O’Connor 7-2, Stephen Payne demolished Phil Davis 7-1 and Dave Hall progressed into the last eight by dispatching Dave Whitehouse 7-2. Paul McNeil also looked good in knocking out Pete Ashman 7-0, and Jason Dixon played well to beat Martin Prime 7-3. Finally, Berkshire’s Scott Yardley beat Darren Suchley in a closely fought 7-6 match, while Graham Butler also ended Steve Parker’s interest in the event with a 7-6 victory.

The quarter-finals were mostly one-sided affairs. Kevin McCallum had a 7-0 walkover against the previously solid-looking Dave Hall, an impressive Paul McNeil hammered Scott Yardley 7-1 and Hampshire’s Jason Dixon also beat Graham Butler 7-1. The closest match of this round saw Stephen Payne take on the winner of the previous event, Dean Wisher, and come through a 7-5 winner.

The semi-finals promised two strong matches with Kevin McCallum drawn to play Stephen Payne and Paul McNeil due to play Jason Dixon. The first semi-final saw the ever-aggressive McCallum win through 7-3 against Payne, while the second was a much closer affair with Paul McNeil beating Jason Dixon 7-4.

The final could have gone either way with both player bang on form and recording some impressive wins along the way. But it was McCallum who eventually proved the stronger to claim his first Region Seven Tour title of the season with a 7-5 win. Whether it will be his last remains to be seen with the grand final only one event away and many players still battling for top 16 finishes.
