Mark Selby tweeted this earlier:

Quote:

Devastated to lose. Certain shots I could not physically play because I was in pain. Just gutted it's happened. Any other comp I can accept, but the Worlds is special and, in all honestly, I had no possible chance whatsoever due to this disc bulge.

I'm sorry but to turn up to the World Championships when people have wagered thousands of pounds on you not just winning the match but winning the tournament when you know you had "no possible chance whatsoever" is a disgrace.

Selby has conned everyone by turning up and should be sanctioned by World Snooker. Cursing

No he shouldn't.
Maybe he entered in hope, so what. His bad neck wasn't a secret and he played it down beforehand, as most would do.
Anyone who punted on him knew they were taking a chance.

Pre tournament medicals to be declared fit??

The players can't win. They pull-out of events because they're unwell and people still put the boot into them...

Maybe Ali Carter should let us know how he's getting on with his Crohn's disease before major tournaments.

I'd hate to lose a tenner because I wasn't informed that he was going through a really bad patch.

has he conned the fans?

No

He left China early due to being in pain and stated he was TRYING to be fit for the worlds.

He also posted

Quote:
Tough draw against Barry Hawkins in the World Championship. But I'm not bothered who I play to be honest, I'd be happy just playing!

Hes been transparent in having an injury, one he has been getting treatment for which saw him fit enough to play.

The statement you quoted was obviously him having the hindsight of giving it a go and knowing AFTER that he didnt have any chance.

Out of interest, how can a world #1 be overrated? Don't they need to win stuff to be #1?

I just meant in general.

My point was you can't be #1 AND be an overrated big headed muppet. You have to either win a few events, or do consistently well.

davis being number 1 means nothing, alan warriner was number 1 so was colin lloyd, both utter garbage at darts, but number 1 because a lot of players werent interested in playing mickey mouse events!

selby and murphy have played more tournaments than anybody, have they won much?????

if every player played in every tournament then rankings may mean something but at the minute they mean zero, ronnie would have been out of top 16 if he didnt come back from 4-0 down in first round of german masters which says it all really.

the new systen they are putting in place should be a lot better and will reflect who is actually the best...........hopefully

my point was just a direct answer to the question you asked.
they dont need to win stuff (tournaments) to be no.1
if youd typed: Dont they need to do consistently well to be no1, id have said yes.

Selby turned up to get his prize money. He is a professional and in the draw and it is his living.

It was clear before the tournament he wasn't 100% so anyone betting on him should knmow this. And i'd suggest the odds were perhaps slightly longer knowing the situation so tempting people with peceived better value.
Manchester United's last THIRTEEN league titles have all been won through favourable refereeing decisions. Fact. :0)

It will be interesting to see if he does get in trouble from World Snooker. I believe if you are not fit, or have some sort of medical complaint then you have to let the authorities know. This is probably due to any irregular betting patterns that may occur?

I remember Ding Junhui getting fined during a PTC event last season I believe for not informing the tournament officials that he was unwell.

It is an interesting debate though, I remember Simon Whitlock at the PDC world darts this year after having a broken foot. Before his first round match with Dennis Smith both players were 5/6, because people had caught wind of Whitlocks injury. In the end Whitlock coasted 3-0 and I think averaged over a hundred!

Anyone know what the odds were before the match? I would assume that the odds calculators would have known he was injured and reflected it.
My opinion should just be accepted as objectivity itself.

Of course he shouldn't be sanctioned, who's to say that in practice and in the first couple of frames he wasn't in too much pain,

Agreed on Selby though, he's very overrated, boring to watch, and the fact that he's number 1 in the world without really winning anything of any real prestige makes a bit of a mockery out of the ranking system.

Selby was in his rights to turn up. If ever questioned he can simply argue it was getting better and he thought he would be better. He could also say he had a reaction during the match.

I wouldnt be turning down £12000 to just turn up and sit in my chair

I'm fat, that's how I roll
