Hearn tells 'lazy' players to get working

Snooker News juan-king writes

Snooker's supremo Barry Hearn (pictured) has branded many snooker players as "lazy" and vowed to get them working to improve the well-being of the sport.

The new chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) will reveal his manifesto at the end of the month, but he has dropped heavy hints that the emphasis will be on keeping players active. He promised a vastly increased workload, with more than 20 tournaments a year and which he expects players to play in, even when prize money is poor.

Hearn, who has revolutionised darts and enjoyed considerable success in promoting snooker and boxing, is ready to walk away if the players revolt against his regime. "I'm going to set up a whole range of new tournaments," he said. "I've got to get these guys working, they've got to realise this is a job as well as a profession. It's not a hobby. And I'm relying on them to rise to the challenge."

IPA News juan-king writes

Attention ALL amateur players!

A staggering £34,000 in prize monies are up for grabs at the Barcelo 'Festival of Pool' which takes place over the Easter weekend of 2nd to 5th April 2010 at Barcelo Hinckley Island Hotel, Hinckley, Leicestershire.

In addition to the International Tour 2 events of Main Tour, Club Open and Professional event, there will be a further two competitions taking place which are for amateur only players who are not already members of the IPA Tour.

The Barcelo Open, which carries a £4,200 prize fund, is not open to Tour players and gives amateur players a great chance to see how the Tour operates alongside the chance of scooping a slice of the prize fund, which is paid down to the last 32 players.

Snooker News juan-king writes

This new feature on World Snooker will focus on one player each month, giving an insight into his life on and off the table. First up is Pokerstars.com Masters champion Mark Selby.

Part One: "Thorne on my side"

“I first picked up a cue at the age of seven, playing English pool. My dad was a keen player so my brother and I went to the club with him. I started playing snooker when I was nine and, of course at first I found it difficult as it’s very different to pool. But by the time I was 11 I had made my first century.
